Lasercut were approached on behalf of Toyota UK to see if it was possible to make a life size saloon car from cardboard. Further more would it be possible to sit in it and drive it? We embraced the challenge.

We embraced the challenge. Through in-house 3D digital modelling, we adapted the overall mass of the design to include a bespoke chassis that would incorporate the motor and wheel components from a mobility scooter.

Using specialist software the design was spliced into over 600 10mm cardboard parts. Over several weeks these were laser cut and gradually the car emerged. Finally, 7 months later the car was ready.

Lasercut were on hand for specialist delivery and technical assistance at the NEC in Birmingham where it made its debut at the Grand Designs show and was driven by Kevin McCloud.

The project was a huge success. A film showing key stages of the production, featuring interviews with the Lasercut team, was produced and uploaded to YouTube – it reached over one million views within 2 weeks of its release!

This project took this perfectionist spirit to the next level.
